Masterclass: Sample this! & STAY OUT OF TROUBLE.
Timetable: Thursday 17 Oct. 2019 // 14:00 – 15:00
Tickets: Free entrance
Are you using samples in your music? If so, hear us out for a moment. You are allowed to sample up to 6 seconds or 1 bar of a song for your productions. And as long as you don’t make money with your music, it’s ok to sample. True or false?
If you believe these statements are correct, it’s worth visiting this masterclass by Bindu De Knock from Crosslink Legal. Besides being an art form within the electronic, hip hop, bass and many other scenes, sampling remains surrounded by legal implications. With the recent outcomes of the (in)famous Kraftwerk case by the European Court of Justice, it’s essential to shed some light on the topic of sampling again. And Bindu De Knock is the right person for the job.
De Knock is quite extraordinary in her field, being an attorney at law, musician, engineer, book author, speaker and business mind. Contract negotiation is one of her specialities, and during this masterclass, she’ll be sharing some valuable insights with you and will give you practical examples. What is allowed in sampling? How do you clear the correct rights for the use of a sample? How do you negotiate sample clearance? What are the pitfalls? And what about samples obtained from Splice? Many questions about sampling will be answered. Sample this! And stay out of trouble. This masterclass is for all you sample artists out there.
Masterclass: PRODUCTION SKILLS & CREATIVE CHOICES

Tickets: Free entrance
Learn some cool tricks from producer, engineer and Abbey Road Institute lecturer, Nick Ribbens. By deconstructing one of his Top40 collaboration tracks, he will demonstrate what his approach is to writing, producing and mixing. Nick will walk you through his process of creative decisions making.
Nick Ribbens is a songwriter, producer and mix engineer from Dutch origin. He started his music career as a drummer at a reasonably young age, playing with various bands and artists. Eventually, Nick moved on to working full-time on writing, producing and mixing projects for Sony, Universal and Cloud9. Recent projects he has been involved in are Top40 hits with BLØF, Ed Struijlaart, Barrett Crake and Rondé.
In his workflow, Nick prefers combining both digital and analog equipment and has a particular interest for old skool (toy) keyboards from the ’80s. Besides being locked up in studios, Nick has also embarked on multi-city tours as a DJ throughout China.
